The Forte Mare fortress (translated as the Sea Fortress) is located just above the seafront, guarding the entrance into Herceg Novi from the direction of the sea. It was built between the 14th and 17th centuries, only to be restored by the Venetians during the 17th century and subsequently by the Austro-Hungarians. The fortress sits on a rocky outcrop above the promenade. Inside the walls there is a passage leading from the sea shore to the top of the fortress.
So small you could drive across it in an afternoon. Don’t just skim through it but try to truly absorb it’s essence.
