Montenegro's stunning mountain landscapes and transparent blue sea welcome all biking fans in one of Europe's most exciting biking destinations. This is a place where bikers can enjoy real wilderness biking, where they can escape the crowds and feel a true sense of freedom.
Why do bikers love Montenegro? First of all, the country of the 'Black Mountains' offers plenty of fascinating sites and picturesque sceneries to explore. Passing along quiet trails and country roads through sleepy villages and peaceful mountain pastures, bikers can admire its unprecedented natural beauties and get closer to the local spirit and culture.
Experience Montenegro's 'Wild Beauty' and take a deep breath, as some 3,000 km of biking trails are already mapped out! The map 'Wilderness Biking Montenegro' contains five Top Trails with complete GPS data. About 1,700 km of scenic routes are marked, signposted and documented in a unique road book ('Montenegro Mountain Bike Guide'). But there is also good news for road cycling enthusiasts. A new project, Panorama Roads of Montenegro, will be completed soon, offering great opportunities for cycling tours on paved roads.
Montenegro has five national parks of widely contrasting characteristics, perfect for various biking tours. Three of them are described below:
The road between Lovćen National Park and the old town of Kotor is an absolute 'must see' of Montenegro and is often described as one of the world's most exciting scenic routes. Enjoy a cycling downhill, starting at an altitude of around 950 m above sea level. The tour leads over 25 serpentines, each of them offering another breathtaking view of the Bay of Kotor. It ends right in the Old Town of Kotor, named by 'Lonely Planet' as the top city to visit in 2016 and situated at the end of the magnificent Bay of Kotor, often called Europe’s southernmost fjord.
Situated between Albania and Montenegro, Skadar Lake is a nature paradise with spectacular bird watching possibilities. Some 240 bird species are inhabiting its shores, including some of Europe's last pelicans. The narrow, picturesque roads around Skadar Lake are paved and biking is the best way to explore the beauty, nature, history and culture of the Lake.
No trip to Montenegro is complete without experiencing the highlights of the north. The magnificent Durmitor National Park, with its dramatic canyons, glacial lakes and harsh mountain peaks, offers the best routes for mountain biking. One of the most picturesque tours is the Ring around Durmitor, an 85 km long paved road that winds through a splendid scenery, across vast mountain pastures and past several vertigo-inducing viewpoints above the Tara and Sušica canyons.
Get ready for an unforgettable experience. Enjoy the stunning nature, accept the genuine hospitality of the local people and discover the hidden secrets of Montenegro!
