Only six years after the proclamation the Yellowstone as the first world’s national park, the territory of Biogradska gora was protected. The preservation of Biogradska gora, with the flows of both rivers Biogradska and Jezerstice dates back from 1878 when this territory was proclaimed the Prince’s Ban (Knjazev zabran), the gift to the that time ruler of Montenegro - Prince Nikola Petrovic.

biogradska gora, montenegro

The National Park was established in 1952. Situated in the northeastern part of Montenegro, between the Tara and Lim rivers in the central part of the Bjelasica mountain massif, it occupies an area of 1,600 hectares.

Encircled by mountain peaks, crossed by streams and valleys, decorated with beautiful lakes, adorned with a century-old trees and tame meadows, this park represents the magnificent natural value.

The landscape is exceptionally tame, with the dominant green color all over the expanses of the unique forest ecosystems intersected by picturesque areas with meadow vegetation.

The glacial relief forms, such are peaks over 2,000 m high and glacier ponds and cirques, with several glacier lakes, give to its landscape an unrepeatable beauty.

The most important natural value of this National Park is the primeval forest Biogradska gora which lies on the territory of 1,600 ha and represents one of the last three primeval forests in Europe. It has the character of the rigorous protected reserve.

The beautiful Biogradsko lake is situated in the heart of the primeval forest, the biggest and the best known in the range of the glacial lakes on the National Park territory. The entire beauty of an old forest is reflected on the clean lake water giving it a blue-green colour.
