Hiking / Trekking

There is a lot to be discovered in Montenegro: The rugged massifs with their towering mountains and remote mountain lakes, peaceful alpine pastures and forests, snow-covered peaks, diverse flora and fauna and breathtaking mountain rivers of wild beauty. Furthermore, there are many historic attractions along the routes. And one ought to get to know the Montenegrins in the mountains. During the varied history of the country, the inhabitants learnt to defend themselves against the various invaders – and to receive guests with genuine hospitality. Look them up in their huts scattered on the pastures and experience a visit to friends. Montenegro’s as yet almost undiscovered mountain world is unique in the whole Mediterranean and is made accessible also for hikers and mountain enthusiasts. A nationwide network of hiking trails of 3,000 kilometers, consecutively marked uniformly and with clear signposting, invites to make unforgettable tours in a varied natural and cultural ambience. Get ready and “take a walk on the wild side“ - we suggest to start planning with this overview map to the wilderness hiking trails in whole Montenegro.

Local maps are available for all five National Parks –  in these factsheets for hikers and bikers you find useful information and contacts.

For your comfort and safety, as well as nature protection, please pay attention to some important tips, made available in this leaflet.

The Montenegrin Hiking Transversal Crnogorska Transverzala 1 (therefore marked „CT1“) is the first long distance hiking journey through the breathtaking diversity of landscapes. Here you can download 4 spectacular panorama maps to this trail, with a total length of 164 km.

A detailed guidebook is available via Montenegro´s Mountaineering Association,  www.pscg.me. Their local clubs maintain the mountain huts.

Another panoramic “Top Trail” for hikers is the tour over the coastal mountains - (“Primorska Planinarska Transferzala”, briefly PPT). It was opened in 2006 and completely marked and signposted in 2011. The trail leads from Herceg Novi at Montenegro’s northern Adriatic coast, alongside the coastal mountains of Orjen, around the Bay of Kotor, via Lovcen and through Pastrovska Gora as well as the Rumija mountains to Bar in the southern part of the coast.  An overwhelming, ever-changing view and numerous historic sites along the trail make this hiking tour an unforgettable experience. Furthermore, 150 km access trails offer many options for day hikes throughout the year. Impressions in this panorama map.

Just in case the 4,275 peaks of Montenegro were not enough… Take time to discover new cross border trails like the “Peaks of the Balkans” (www.peaksofthebalkans.com) or the “Via Dinarica”
(Project page: http://viadinarica.com).

Welcome to walk, experience and enjoy the “Wild Beauty”!
